This past weekend I had the opportunity to host a group of 19 girls for a virtual experience designed for girls of color. As I reflect on the day and the feedback that has been shared by participants, parents, and presenters, there is so much I want to share!
Our day was shaped around an African proverb that says "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
In total, there were six women who offered their time and their talents to empower the girls through education and inspiration. They offered information that increased knowledge, and also pushed the girls in ways that caused them to challenge the thoughts and behaviors that have potential to be detrimental to their lives.
There has been so much positive feedback about this program and one comment that has stuck with me was shared by a high school participant. She shared that, through this, she realized confidence comes from so much more than the beauty one sees in the mirror. It is is also reflective of the knowledge, thoughts, beliefs, and qualities that come from inside. I was so happy to hear this because her comment spoke straight to the point of my purpose for hosting this program. To me, empowering children of color is not just about skin color. It is about pouring into the souls contained by that skin, educating lives, creating an experience that will be memorable and enriching. That is how we come together to go far!
To each and every parent who arranged for your daughter to be present, I thank you. For each session facilitator, thank you. I look forward to coming together again next October, if not sooner!
